About

Old Main opened in 1891 as the University of Arizona's first building, built of red brick from clay fired on site. It now houses the Office of the President, and the Alexander Berger Memorial Fountain stands in front. On the Mall just outside the Student Union, the USS Arizona Mall Memorial traces the battleship's outline, about 597 feet long, and lines up with Old Main. It holds 1,177 bronze medallions with the name, rank and home state of each sailor and Marine killed aboard the ship at Pearl Harbor. Walking the campus is free, but parking is paid, and the Second Street Garage is closest. The Student Union bell tower holds a bell salvaged from the ship.
