About

South Mountain Park and Preserve covers more than 16,000 acres across three mountain ranges. It is one of the largest city-run parks in the country, with more than 100 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. Dobbins Lookout, at 2,330 feet, is the highest point in the park open to the public, and you can hike up or drive Summit Road. Getting in costs nothing, and the visitor center is open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. From the lookout you get a wide view across the Valley. Phoenix bought the original 13,000 acres in 1924, and the park marked its 100th anniversary in 2024.
