About

Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza sits across 17th Avenue from the old Capitol, with more than 30 memorials set along paved walkways and lawns. It is named for Governor Wesley Bolin, who died five days before the Legislature created the plaza in 1978. The best-known pieces come from the USS Arizona, including one of the two anchors used aboard the ship and its signal mast. The mast stands 1,177 feet from the Capitol dome, a number that stands for the men who died aboard the battleship. The plaza is free and open from sunrise to sunset, with no restrooms or picnic tables on site. Pick up a memorial map inside the Capitol Museum rotunda before you start walking.
