The Arizona Capitol Museum fills the old state Capitol in downtown Phoenix, the building with the copper dome and the Winged Victory statue on top. That 17-foot zinc wind vane has stood on the dome since 1901. Admission is always free, and you can explore at your own pace on weekdays, or on Saturdays from September through May. Exhibits cover Arizona's history and government, plus USS Arizona artifacts such as the ship's silver service and personal items from crew members. Free public parking is in the plaza just east of the museum. When the Legislature is in session, you can also watch state government at work in the House and Senate buildings on either side.
