Fourth Avenue became a shopping street after the Fourth Avenue Underpass was built in 1916. Today it has more than 140 locally owned boutiques, bars and cafes, all in historic buildings, just northeast of downtown. Walking the avenue and window shopping are free, and the shops, restaurants and street parking are where the money goes. The Sun Link streetcar is fare-free, so you can skip parking altogether. The avenue also hosts the Fourth Avenue Street Fair, one of the longest-running street fairs in the country. Fair dates change from year to year, so check the merchants' site before you go.
