Tumamoc Hill is an 860-acre ecological reserve run by the University of Arizona, and scientists have studied it as a living desert laboratory for more than 100 years. You walk it on a paved road that climbs about 700 feet over 1.5 miles to the top. Walking the hill is free, and it's open every day from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Park on the street along Anklam Road, because the nearby hospital and medical office lots are off limits. The university has counted an average of about 1,000 walkers a day. Pets, bikes and skateboards aren't allowed, and everyone stays on the road because the hill is a sensitive archaeological site.
