Echo Canyon Trailhead is the starting point for the Echo Canyon Trail up Camelback Mountain, one of the best-known hikes in the country. The trail covers 1.14 miles with 1,400 feet of elevation change, and the city rates it extremely difficult. There is no fee to hike, but parking is limited and the entry gate closes once the lot is full. The short Bobby's Rock Trail, a 0.2-mile loop, starts from the same trailhead. The route is steep, rocky and fully exposed, and the city advises that only experienced hikers try for the summit in good weather. Lots often fill by late morning on weekdays and stay full on winter and spring weekends, so an early start helps.
