Papago Park & Hole-in-the-Rock

Hole-in-the-Rock is a red sandstone hill in Papago Park with a chamber eroded clean through the rock. The trail up is about 0.3 miles, with steps that climb 200 feet in a short stretch. Papago Park is free to enter, and so are its hikes. The Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden sit right next to the park, but they are separate paid attractions. The ancient Hohokam likely used light through the opening to track the sun's position. Today the chamber's view west over Phoenix makes it a popular sunset stop.
