Mill Avenue grew up around Hayden's Ferry and the flour mill that still stands near the river end of downtown Tempe. Several old brick buildings survive along the street, including the 1888 Hackett House and the 1901 Tempe National Bank. Strolling the street and taking in the historic buildings is free. The shops, bars and restaurants along it are where you would spend money. Start at the Hayden Flour Mill, which ran for 80 years before closing in 1998 and is now a preserved landmark. It's fenced off, but you can walk around the outside, and the A Mountain trail starts right behind it.
