About

Tortilla Flat started as a stagecoach stop in 1904 and still sits along the Apache Trail, under a sign that reads Population 6. It calls itself the oldest operating stagecoach town in Arizona. Strolling the boardwalk is free, and so is a peek inside the saloon, where dollar bills from visitors paper the walls and real saddles serve as bar stools. You'd pay for food and drinks, the prickly pear gelato and fudge at the Country Store, and souvenirs from the mercantile. The drive up SR 88 from Apache Junction winds past the Superstitions and Canyon Lake, and that's half the reason to go. Shops open at 10am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, and close at 6pm.
