About

Massacre Falls is a seasonal waterfall tucked into the base of the Superstition Mountains, reached on the Massacre Grounds Trail off First Water Road near Lost Dutchman State Park. The hike is about 5.5 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of climbing, through saguaros, rock formations and wide views of the range. Parking at the trailhead and hiking are both free, since it isn't one of the Tonto National Forest's fee sites. The lot is small, so come early, and don't park along the dirt road. The falls only run after rain, so the best time to go is in winter or right after a monsoon storm, when water spills down the cliff face. The trail is faint in a few spots, so watch your route closely and bring plenty of water.
