About

Tombstone boomed after Ed Schieffelin found silver nearby in 1877, and its historic district was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961. It's about an hour and 15 minutes southeast of Tucson, and Allen Street is still the center of town. Walking the streets is free, and the visitor center on Allen Street makes a good first stop. Most of the well-known sites charge admission, including the O.K. Corral, the Bird Cage Theatre, Boothill Graveyard ($6) and Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park ($10 for adults). Fires in 1881 and 1882 burned most of the business district, and much of what you see went up in the rebuild that followed. The 1882 courthouse sits a block over on Toughnut Street if you decide to pay for one stop.
