In 1937, George and Rachael Ellis homesteaded 10 acres of open desert here, beside the canal where cowboys drove cattle. George built the first house from redwood he salvaged from an old water pipeline. About a dozen buildings now house working studios for potters, photographers, fiber artists and painters. Painters Philip C. Curtis and Fritz Scholder lived here or nearby, and a racecar body built on site won the 1969 Indy 500. The compound has been on the National Register since 1999. You can often step into studios, talk with the artists and buy work directly. Scottsdale Arts also runs talks and music here.
