Downtown Tucson rings in the new year with a free block party built around a countdown to a giant illuminated taco dropping at midnight in place of a traditional ball. The plaza fills with food trucks, a stage with live music, and a growing crowd as the night goes on, building toward the countdown and the taco's descent at the stroke of midnight. The tone stays playful and distinctly Tucson, a quirky alternative to bigger city celebrations. It works well for families leaving before midnight and night-owls sticking around for the drop.
