Oktoberfest fills the Theresienwiese fairground with massive beer tents, each run by a different Munich brewery with its own band, food, and crowd. Visitors share long wooden tables inside tents that can hold thousands of people at once. Servers carry armfuls of liter-sized steins between rows of tables while brass bands play and the whole tent sings along. Traditional Bavarian food like pretzels, roast chicken, and sausages gets passed around alongside the beer. Lederhosen and dirndls turn up everywhere, not just as costumes but as the actual local dress code for the occasion. The mood swings between rowdy toasts and full-tent singalongs, especially once the bands hit the loud stuff.
