The Kentucky Derby has been run on the first Saturday of May at Churchill Downs since 1875. The two-minute race is preceded by two weeks of events including the Kentucky Oaks, the Thurby card, and the Kentucky Derby Festival Parade. On race day, 150,000+ people pack the stands and infield — many in elaborate hats, all with a mint julep in hand. General admission infield access is the most accessible entry point. Reserved grandstand seats and dining packages book out months in advance. The singing of "My Old Kentucky Home" before the field enters the gate is one of the most genuinely moving moments in American sports.
