The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race — "The Last Great Race on Earth" — launches every March with a ceremonial start through the streets of downtown Anchorage before the real race begins the following day in Willow. Thousands of spectators line 4th Avenue to watch mushers and their teams make the 11-mile run through the city. It's a genuine Alaska spectacle — the dogs are electric, the crowd is loud, and the atmosphere is unlike anything else. Watch from the start line on 4th Avenue for the best view, and dress in serious layers.
