Comet C/2024 J3 (ATLAS) reaches perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) around November 25, 2026. With an absolute magnitude of 5.0, this comet may reach naked-eye visibility under dark skies around its closest approach. The days surrounding perihelion typically offer the best viewing as the comet is at its brightest and most active. Comets are ancient, icy bodies left over from the formation of the solar system. As a comet approaches the Sun, solar heat vaporizes its ice, releasing gas and dust that forms the comet's glowing coma and spectacular tail — always pointing away from the Sun. No two comets behave exactly alike, and brightness predictions are notoriously uncertain, but a bright comet near perihelion is one of astronomy's most spectacular sights. How to watch: Start with binoculars to find the comet, then observe with your naked eye once you know where to look. Check a current star chart app (SkySafari, Stellarium, or Heavens-Above) for the comet's exact position on any given night.
