The Geminids are arguably the best and most prolific meteor shower of the year, regularly producing 100โ150 colorful, multicolored meteors per hour at peak. Unusually, they are produced not by a comet but by the asteroid 3200 Phaethon โ making them scientifically unique among major annual showers. Where to Look: Meteors radiate from the constellation Gemini, near the bright stars Castor and Pollux, which rise in the east in early evening. Unlike most showers, the Geminids produce good rates starting around 9โ10 PM โ no need to wait until after midnight. Bundle up (December can be cold), find a dark location, and scan the entire sky for the best show. Fun Facts: The Geminids are one of only two major annual meteor showers not produced by a comet โ the other is the Quadrantids. They are unusually slow compared to other swift showers, traveling at about 35 km/s, which is why they appear brightly colored. In 2026, the Geminids coincide with a waxing crescent moon that sets early โ leaving most of the night in darkness for excellent viewing. Moon Conditions: ๐ 21% full โ very good conditions โญ
