The Draconids are unique in that they are best seen in the early evening rather than after midnight β most unusual for a meteor shower. Produced by comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner, they typically produce 10β20 meteors/hour but have produced legendary 'meteor storms' with thousands of meteors in 1933 and 1946. Where to Look: Look toward the constellation Draco in the northern sky, near the stars Eltanin and Rastaban (the 'Dragon's Eyes'). Unlike most showers, the Draconids are best viewed right after dark in the evening β the radiant is highest at dusk. From Phoenix, face north-northwest soon after sunset for the best view. Fun Facts: The Draconids are one of very few showers best seen in the evening hours rather than before dawn. In 1933 and 1946, the Draconids produced spectacular storms with 5,000β10,000 meteors per hour. In 2026, the moon is just 1% full during peak β nearly perfect viewing conditions. Moon Conditions: π 1% full β excellent dark sky conditions β
